Specific gravity is a dimensionless ratio that compares a substance's density to the density of a reference substance, almost always water at 4°C (39.2°F).
Divide the substance's density by the density of water at the same reference temperature. At 4°C, water's density is 999.97 kg/m³ (commonly rounded to 1000).
Multiply the specific gravity by the density of water at the reference temperature. The result takes the unit of whatever unit system you're working in.
Water's density changes with temperature. At 4°C it's at maximum density (999.97 kg/m³), but at 20°C it drops to about 998.2 kg/m³, and at 25°C it's roughly 997.05 kg/m³. This calculator adjusts the reference water density based on your selected temperature for more accurate results. For most industrial storage applications, the difference is small, but for precise chemical work, it matters.
