In 2021, One Clarion supplied one 50,000 gallon custom fiberglass (FRP) storage tank for a food company in Valley, Alabama. The vertical, flat bottom design provides dedicated potable water storage, manufactured with FDA approved raw materials and NSF/ANSI 61 certified resin.

Project Overview

This project delivered a single custom aboveground FRP tank for dedicated potable water service at a food company facility in Valley, Alabama. One Clarion's scope covered supply of the tank; offloading, setting, and installation were by others.

Our approach

We treated this as a potable service first specification. Every material decision started with drinking water duty in mind, from resin manufactured with FDA approved raw materials and certified to NSF/ANSI 61 through the white gelcoat finish and post cure rinse. Our Sales Specialists worked with the customer to settle an access and fitting configuration that supports inspection and service over time.

Why it matters?

Potable water storage carries a higher standard of scrutiny than general process water. Documented materials, certified resin, and a clearly defined scope support the customer's inspection readiness and the safe operation of the facility's water supply.

The challenge

The customer needed a single dedicated storage tank for potable water at its Valley, Alabama facility. The specification had to satisfy potable material requirements and a defined design basis while remaining practical to service, with placement and installation handled by others.

Potable water material requirements

Every material in contact with stored water had to be appropriate for drinking water service, with documentation behind it. That requirement shaped resin selection, finish, and final surface preparation.

Design basis requirements

The tank had to be built for contents heavier than water and for elevated service temperatures, at atmospheric pressure and vacuum conditions.

Access and long term serviceability

A tall vertical tank needs practical interior access for future inspection and cleaning. It also had to arrive ready for offloading, setting, and anchoring by others.

The solution

Every decision on this tank comes back to one job: holding drinking water for a working food facility. That starts with the materials, FDA approved raw materials and NSF/ANSI 61 certified resin, finished in white gelcoat with UV inhibitor and completed with a post cure rinse, so there is a clear material record behind the tank's potable water storage duty. The build itself is a custom vertical FRP tank with a flat bottom and conical top, 15'6" in diameter [VERIFY: confirm 15'6" is the diameter; the gallonage math supports this reading] by 35'6" of straight sidewall, which works out to 50,000 nominal gallons. Construction to ASTM D3299 and D4097 covers a design basis of 1.3 maximum specific gravity and 100 F service at atmospheric pressure and vacuum, comfortable margin over everyday water service. Serviceability got the same attention. A 30" side manway and a 24" top manway, both with 304 SS bolting and EPDM gaskets, keep interior access practical for inspection and cleaning down the road, while two 6" 50# FF flanges handle inlet and outlet, supported by two 2" fittings, one 1" fitting, and an 8" mushroom vent with bug screen. Four lift lugs and an 8" FRP load ledge with fourteen hold down dogs make the tank ready for offloading, setting, and installation by others. NSF certification of the finished unit, engineering specific to the site, and any stamps, licenses, or codes were outside One Clarion's scope.
